Greek Trainer v8.0.0

BNTG course trainer · grammar ceiling stays bounded while vocabulary can be studied independently.

Greek Trainer Help

Study Modes

Parsing
Identify person, number, tense, voice, mood, lexical form, and inflected meaning.
Nouns & Pronouns
Recognize case, number, gender, and meaning; Nouns also asks for the lexical form.
Vocabulary
Practice BNTG glosses by single chapter, chapter range, or cumulative range, independently of the grammar ceiling.
Clause Builder
Analyze first, translate second. Select a finite verb, identify its person and number, find its subject and completing phrase. Each finished step becomes a compact ✓ line. Analyze every finite verb before the final translation.
Translation
Translate a passage, then compare with the model. Different valid English wording is possible; Compare is not an automatic error grade.
Concepts
Review grammar principles with multiple-choice questions.
Weakness Drill
Practice a focused selection of challenging parsing forms.
Review Misses
Revisit missed parsing forms. A fully right answer clears that form from the queue. Misses also return during later parsing practice; an empty queue lets you continue ordinary practice.

Settings

The chapter ceiling bounds course grammar. Vocabulary has its own chapter controls. Parsing filters select tenses, voices, and All verified, Biblical, or Paradigm sources. Include εἰμί adds its present, imperfect, and future forms independently of the voice filters.

Random order shuffles the pool; turn it off for In Order. Shuffle Pool reshuffles the current pool once without changing that preference. New Session resets session scores and position. Translation offers Course, New Testament, or Mixed sources, difficulty filters, and optional bracketed vocabulary help.

In Clause Builder, later BNTG vocabulary gets [gloss · Ch.X], outside-BNTG words may get [gloss], and proper names have no bracket. Progress and preferences are saved in this browser; clearing site storage can erase them.

Rules & Help

T-chart: use the professor’s Primary/Secondary columns and Active/Middle-Passive rows to recognize endings. Square of Stops: labial + σ → ψ; velar + σ → ξ; dental + σ → σ.

Contracts: α, ε, or ο meets another vowel and contracts. Liquids: stems ending λ, μ, ν, ρ usually reject future σ and contract; μένω is present, μενῶ is future. Liquid aorists may lengthen the stem vowel.

Third declension: learn the nominative and genitive to recognize the consonant stem. Neuter nominative and accusative forms coincide. Pronouns: read case, number, and gender; αὐτός can be personal, intensive, or identical (“the same”).

How grading works

One valid BNTG gloss is enough. Verb lexical glosses use “I …”. Accents are generally ignored in typed answers; displayed Greek still preserves meaningful polytonic spelling. Movable nu and supported legitimate alternative analyses are accepted. Pronoun “to/for” glosses allow either English alternative.

In Parsing, Nouns, Pronouns, and Vocabulary, press Enter or Check to grade. After a right answer, stay on the item to review; press Enter or Check again to advance. After a wrong answer, revise and check again. Next advances manually; Reveal shows the answer where offered. Clause Builder advances structural steps immediately and offers a model translation only at the end.

About Greek Trainer

Greek Trainer v8.0.0 follows Beginning with New Testament Greek (BNTG) for course progression and grammar, with Westcott–Hort New Testament and Rahlfs/CATSS Septuagint material where appropriate. Biblical attestation supports the data; it does not override BNTG morphology. This quick manual complements the course textbook.

Quick Reference

Course

Only material at or below the ceiling appears in course practice.

Session

Tenses

Voices

εἰμί paradigm

Explicitly includes present, imperfect, and future εἰμί forms. This control is independent of the normal voice filters.

Parsing source

All combines verified BNTG paradigm practice with forms attested in Westcott-Hort NT and Rahlfs/CATSS LXX. Biblical shows only attested forms. Paradigm focuses on course-valid paradigm forms.

Translation source

Course follows the BNTG chapter progression. New Testament adds broader authentic reading. Mixed uses both.

Translation difficulty

Difficulty combines only grammar and vocabulary already at or below your chapter ceiling.

Translation vocabulary help

You can still turn help on or off for the current translation without changing this default.

Missed-item review

A missed parsing form returns after roughly 5–10 later attempts. Use Review Misses anytime to work the queue directly.
